Matthew 16:21-28
What does it really mean to be obedient to God? Jesus tells his disciples that following God’s path won’t always be easy—or comfortable. Peter wants to protect Jesus from suffering, but Jesus reminds them that God’s way is not always our way. Sometimes, obedience means stepping into the places of suffering, injustice, and pain rather than running away from them. Jesus calls us to “take up our cross and follow” him—not by seeking out suffering, but by courageously facing the suffering that already exists and joining God’s work of love, service, justice, and liberation. This week, we’re reflecting on a difficult question: Where might we be resisting God’s plan because following it makes us uncomfortable?
